Cologne-based The Match Factory has acquired the rights to Swedish-Polish director Magnus von Horn’s latest Danish film, “The Girl With the Needle.” This stylized black-and-white chiller is billed as a “fairy-tale about a horrible truth” and boasts an impressive cast including Trine Dyrholm, Vic Carmen Sonne, and Besir Zeciri.
A Talent to Follow
Magnus von Horn’s captivating storytelling has once again caught the attention of audiences and industry insiders. As head of sales at The Match Factory, Thania Dimitrakopoulou is confident that von Horn’s latest creation will resonate with viewers. “The Girl With the Needle” has all the right ingredients for success – an intriguing plot, an exceptional cast, and an innovative narrative style.
A Dark Drama Unveiled
In this film, von Horn explores a new territory – the period genre. Following his acclaimed films “The Here After” and “Sweat”, this Danish director delves into the world of the Danish angel maker, Dagmar Overbye. Set in post-World War I Copenhagen, “The Girl With the Needle” tells the story of Karoline, a young pregnant factory worker, who finds solace in becoming a wet-nurse for the charismatic Dagmar. Little does she know that behind the facade of a candy shop, Dagmar runs a secret adoption agency, aiding impoverished mothers in finding foster homes for their unwanted babies. As a deep bond forms between the women, Karoline’s world is shattered when she uncovers the nightmarish reality she’s unwittingly embraced.
Exploring the Human Condition
Von Horn’s intention with this film is not to focus solely on the darkness within human beings, but rather to shed light on the unexpected pockets of humanity that can be found even in the darkest places. He masterfully weaves elements of sagas and fairy-tales into the story, presenting the archetype of the innocent girl seduced by an evil witch-like figure. The choice to set the film in a different time period, using a black-and-white aesthetic, serves as a way to create both distance and engagement for the audience. Additionally, it allows for contemplation on important topics such as abortion.
An Impressive Collaboration
In collaboration with talented cinematographer Michal Dymek, von Horn recreates the feel and texture of bygone eras, adding a touch of nostalgia to the film. Currently in post-production, “The Girl With the Needle” is produced by Denmark’s Malene Blenkov of Nordisk Film Creative Alliance, in co-production with Poland’s Lava Films and Sweden’s Nordisk Film Production. The film has received support from various film institutes and funds, including the Danish Film Institute, the Polish Film Institute, the Swedish Film Institute, DR, SVT, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, and Eurimages. Expected to be released in the spring, this highly anticipated film is set to make a lasting impact.
