The Costume Designers Guild Awards, also known as CDG Awards, recently took place to honor the outstanding achievements in costume design. The 26th edition of the awards ceremony saw the movie “Barbie” and the film “Poor Things” take home top honors.
Excellence in Period Film and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film
In the highly competitive category of excellence in period film, Holly Waddington, an Oscar nominee, won for her exceptional work on “Poor Things.” Another Oscar nominee, Jacqueline Durran, was recognized for her remarkable costume design in “Barbie,” winning the excellence in sci-fi/fantasy film award.
Contemporary Costume and Television
Sophie Canale won recognition for her costume design in “Saltburn” in the category of contemporary costume. Additionally, the late Shawna Trpcic was posthumously honored for her work on the Disney+ show “Ahsoka.”
Special Awards and Acknowledgments
The talented Wendi McLendon-Covey served as the host for the event. Annette Bening, a renowned actress, received the Spotlight Award for her exceptional collaboration with costume designers and her recognition of the importance of costume design. Another recipient of a special award was Francine Jamison-Tanchuck, who was presented with the career achievement award. Billie Eilish, known for her unique fashion choices, received the inaugural Vanguard award.
Pay Equity and Guild’s Fight
The theme of pay equity was highlighted during the event, shedding light on the long-standing pay discrepancies in the industry. The Costume Designers Guild has been actively pushing for fair compensation, especially with the upcoming IATSE Basic Agreement negotiations. Costume designers such as B. Åkerlund and Mandi Line used their outfits to support the guild’s call to action.
A Night of Support and Solidarity
The show began with a recorded message from SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, expressing support for the upcoming negotiations and commitment to pay equity. Drescher thanked the Costume Designers Guild for their solidarity during the recent strike.
