Austin Butler

Austin Butler captivated audiences with his incredible transformation into Elvis Presley. Method acting took him to new heights, immersing himself in the role for three years. However, when it came to playing the sociopathic villain Feyd-Rautha in “Dune: Part Two,” Butler opted for a less intense approach.

In a joint interview with Denis Villeneuve, the film’s director, Butler explained his decision to tone down his method acting. He recognized the toll it took on his family and friends during “Elvis” and didn’t want to repeat that experience. Villeneuve also chimed in, acknowledging that it was healthier for everyone involved.

Butler’s portrayal of Feyd-Rautha, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen’s sadistic nephew and heir, establishes him as a primary antagonist for Paul (played by Timothee Chalamet) in “Dune: Part Two.” While working with Butler, Villeneuve described the experience as “tremendously playful.” This suggests that Butler was able to strike a balance between staying in character and being present on set.

The director further explained that when the camera was on, Butler became possessed by the role, but he managed to detach from it once it turned off. This allowed him to maintain focus without endangering anyone on set.

Butler’s participation in “Dune: Part Two” marks his debut in the franchise alongside talented actors like Florence Pugh, Lea Seydoux, and Christopher Walken. However, the filming conditions weren’t easy, as heat stroke affected several individuals during the first week of shooting. Butler described the scorching temperatures and challenging environment, expressing how it created a humbling experience that bonded the entire crew.

Warner Bros. will release “Dune: Part Two” in theaters on March 1st.
