Berlinale Director Carlo Chatrian

Outgoing Berlinale artistic director, Carlo Chatrian, has recently addressed the political controversy surrounding the festival’s closing ceremony this year. In their acceptance speeches, several winning filmmakers advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza, sparking backlash from both German politicians and festival organizers. Sadly, this resulted in death threats being received by some of the speakers, including Israeli filmmaker Yuval Abraham, the creator of “No Other Land.” Additionally, during the ceremony, the festival’s Panorama section’s Instagram account was hacked, displaying messages that the festival considered antisemitic.

In response to these events, Chatrian took to social media to convey his thoughts. In a letter posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), the Italian journalist expressed his disappointment, stating that “this year’s festival was a platform for dialogue and exchange for 10 days; however, once the films ceased, a different form of communication emerged—one that weaponizes and instrumentalizes antisemitism for political purposes.”

Chatrian emphasized that regardless of individual political beliefs, it is crucial to remember that freedom of speech is an essential aspect of a democracy. He condemned the violent targeting of the award ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 24, which has now put people’s lives at risk. He firmly stated, “This is unacceptable.”
