The COVID-19 pandemic may have kept Phil Rosenthal away from Asia for his popular Netflix food travel series “Somebody Feed Phil,” but with the Season 7 debut, he’s back in the east. This season features four out of eight episodes set in Asia, including a long-awaited visit to a bucket-list destination that Rosenthal has been dreaming about for years.
One of the highlights of the new season is Rosenthal’s trip to Mumbai, India. In an interview with Variety, Rosenthal shared his excitement about exploring the vibrant city and its delicious cuisine. “I’ve always wanted to go to India, so Mumbai was a real thrill for me. I’ve always loved Indian food, I have so many beautiful Indian friends,” he said.
However, there were a couple of things that initially held Rosenthal back from visiting India. Firstly, he was concerned about the ethical complexities of doing his light-hearted show in a country where extreme wealth and poverty coexist. Mumbai, also known as Maximum City, showcases striking contrasts. But Rosenthal found a way to address these disparities by acknowledging them and trying to make a positive impact in each episode. “You try to leave the place a tiny bit better than you found it. And that’s all we can do when we travel,” he explained.
The second concern was the fear of falling ill, particularly after a previous episode in San Francisco where Rosenthal experienced food poisoning. Many people had warned him about the food and water in India. However, he was reassured that precautions would be taken to ensure his safety during the trip.
In the Season 7 opener, Rosenthal explored Mumbai and was delighted to report that he didn’t get sick at all. Netflix had even planned a two-week break after Mumbai just in case he needed time to recover. Rosenthal also visited other exciting destinations in Season 7, including Washington, D.C., Kyoto, Iceland, Dubai, Orlando, Taipei, and Scotland.
The release of Season 7 coincides with the upcoming publication of “Just Try It!,” a children’s book about food co-written by Rosenthal and his daughter, Lily Rosenthal. This season promises to be a mouthwatering adventure filled with delectable dishes, incredible destinations, and heartwarming moments.
