Rep. Elise Stefanik, a prominent figure in House Republican leadership, recently appeared on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” and expressed hesitation over certifying the 2024 election results. This statement comes after Stefanik had previously supported former President Donald Trump’s unfounded claims of widespread fraud during the 2020 election.
During the interview, host Kristen Welker questioned Stefanik on whether she would vote to certify the election results regardless of their outcome. Stefanik responded by highlighting her refusal to certify the 2020 results in Pennsylvania and other states due to what she perceived as unconstitutional actions and changes to election laws. When pushed further on the matter, Stefanik declined to commit to certifying the 2024 election results, while also criticizing efforts to eliminate Trump from the ballot in Colorado, Maine, and other states.
Stefanik emphasized the need to determine the legality and validity of the 2024 election, remarking that Democrats’ apparent desperation to remove Trump from the ballot amounted to suppressing the American people’s voice. She pointed to an upcoming Supreme Court case in February as an opportunity to rectify this situation and allow Trump to appear on the ballot, asserting that it should be the American people’s decision.
However, when asked by Welker whether she would only certify the results if Trump emerged as the winner, Stefanik clarified that she would support certification as long as it aligned with constitutional principles. She maintained that the events of the 2020 election showcased unconstitutional maneuvers by bypassing state legislatures in changing election laws.
Furthermore, Stefanik defended Trump’s recent remarks, where he referred to the January 6, 2021, Capitol rioters still in prison as “hostages.” She echoed Trump’s language and expressed pride in her support for him, asserting her belief that January 6th marked a truly tragic day for America. In contrast, President Joe Biden denounced Trump’s remarks during his first campaign speech of the year, condemning political violence as unacceptable and a threat to democracy.
Stefanik shifted the focus to Biden and the Democratic Party, labeling them as a threat to democracy. She accused Democrats of attempting to remove Trump from the ballot in states like Colorado and Maine, arguing that such actions suppress the American people’s ability to cast their ballots in the upcoming elections.
As we approach the 2024 election, Elise Stefanik’s uncertainty over certifying the results demonstrates the ongoing tensions and divisions within American politics. With the role of the Supreme Court looming large, the question remains whether the election process will be deemed constitutional and whether the American people’s voices will be heard.
