A Traveler's Needs

Korean rights sales firm Finecut has secured the international distribution rights for the highly-anticipated film “A Traveler’s Needs.” The movie, directed by Hong Sang-soo, is set to premiere in the main competition section of the upcoming Berlinale. This marks Hong Sang-soo’s sixth consecutive selection for the festival since 2020.

Isabelle Huppert, the renowned French actress, reunites with the Korean director for the third time in this film. Their previous collaborations include “Claire’s Camera” and “In Another Country.”

The story revolves around a woman who travels from France to Korea. With no means of supporting herself, she takes up French teaching as a way to make a living. Along the way, she forms relationships with two women and finds solace in lying on rocks and indulging in makkeolli, a traditional Korean rice wine. The dialogues in the film are a mix of Korean, English, and French.

Hong Sang-soo is known for his micro-budget, minimalist dramas that focus on conversations, chance encounters, and female protagonists. He frequently works with a close-knit circle of actors. Apart from Isabelle Huppert, “A Traveler’s Needs” also features Lee Hyeyoung and Kwon Haehyo, who have previously appeared in Hong’s films.

The director has been a regular presence at the Berlinale, with his films making appearances in various sections of the festival. His film “The Woman Who Ran” won the Silver Bear for Best Director, while “Introduction” received the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. “The Novelist’s Film” won a Grand Jury Prize, and “In Water” was featured in Berlin’s Encounters section.

Carlo Chatrian, co-chief of the Berlinale, expressed his delight in having Hong Sang-soo as part of the festival once again. He praised the director’s unique approach to filmmaking and his ability to create compelling narratives despite budget constraints. Chatrian described “A Traveler’s Needs” as a special comedy that explores human relationships with a light yet piercing touch.
