The Condé Nast Union is making its voice heard as nearly 400 union members prepare for a 24-hour work stoppage on Tuesday. Their protest is in response to negotiation practices they deem unlawful. Remarkably, this strike coincides with the announcement of the 96th Academy Awards nominations, scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Employees from publications such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, GQ, Glamour, and others will rally outside the company’s New York offices in support of their cause.

Taking a Stand for Workers’ Rights

Last Thursday, the Condé Nast Union shared its intention to walk out, stating on Twitter: “Our longest yeah boy ever: Nearly 400 of us have pledged to STOP WORK…RT to tell @CondeNast you stand with workers: stop breaking the law, stop union busting, and stop the layoffs.” The union is determined to protect its members’ rights and is calling for an end to unfair practices within the company.

Turbulent Times at Condé Nast

Last November, Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch announced the company’s plans to lay off roughly 300 employees and implement cost-reduction measures. The news was met with disappointment by the affected staff. In a memo, Lynch acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and pledged to support those affected through enhanced severance packages and career services.

Changing Structures and Layoffs

In recent developments, Pitchfork, the digital music publication, was merged with GQ, resulting in layoffs, including the departure of editor-in-chief Puja Patel. Condé Nast’s chief content officer, Anna Wintour, addressed these changes in a memo to staff, explaining that they were made after careful evaluation and with the aim of ensuring the long-term success of the brand.

A Call for Solidarity

The Condé Nast Union is requesting solidarity from employees and the public. In a tweet, they urged people not to engage with the affected publications for 24 hours, including GQ, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Glamour, and others. The union’s efforts are aimed at raising awareness and putting pressure on Condé Nast to address their concerns.
