Joel Kim Booster, known for his critically acclaimed 2022 queer rom-com “Fire Island,” is teaming up with Searchlight Pictures once again. In his new script, Booster plays the role of a gay best friend, responsible for ensuring his bestie’s wedding is perfect. However, Booster expressed his desire to move away from playing the stereotype of the “gay best friend.”
Booster recently spoke about his latest project, “Chrissy & Dave Dine Out,” a new series on Freeform featuring Chrissy Teigen and celebrity chef Dave Chang. The show provides a unique look at some of Los Angeles’ favorite restaurants. Booster hosts dinner parties for celebrity guests, including Jimmy Kimmel, Simu Liu, Regina Hall, and his “Fire Island” co-star Matt Rogers.
These dinner party conversations transcend food, delving into topics such as race, family, and sexuality. Booster embraced the freedom to ask whatever he wanted and discuss various aspects of the guests’ lives, often derailing the producers’ intended direction. His natural curiosity and interest in people made him a perfect fit for the show’s vibe.
When asked about hosting a talk show in the future, Booster admitted that he had never really considered it. However, he acknowledged that there is a competition among gay men aiming for Andy Cohen’s job, jokingly mentioning Matt Rogers. Booster loves to chat and believes hosting a talk show would be an easy job for him. Yet, he recognizes that he is still subject to the industry’s demands and is willing to explore various opportunities.
Booster also discussed the recent Emmy Awards, where “Fire Island” was nominated for best TV movie. While hosting awards shows is not currently on his bucket list, he believes the selection of hosts needs improvement. According to him, it is crucial to choose individuals who genuinely care about the industry and avoid those who appear too cool or detached.
