BEAUTY is subjective, they say. And it seems that our perception of male attractiveness in Hollywood is evolving. It used to be that only the Brad Pitts, George Clooneys, and Ryan Goslings of the world could swoon women and dominate the box office. But now, we’re finding ourselves captivated by less conventionally handsome men.
One such irresistible presence is Barry Keoghan, the star of Saltburn. His beguiling and captivating looks have stirred something deep within me. And I’m not alone in feeling this way. Barry Keoghan recently trended on Twitter after his appearance at the Golden Globes in a striking red suit. People compared him to a cool lesbian aunt arriving for Christmas dinner, with the consensus being that he’s still incredibly attractive.
Another example of an unconventional heartthrob is Adam Driver. His moody and dark aura, along with his distinctive features like his cheeks that go on for weeks and a nose you could ski off, make him undeniably intriguing to me.
I’ve always been drawn to men who have something different about them. The quintessentially handsome ones often come with massive egos and vanity that can be off-putting. Give me someone with imperfections, like a big nose or quirky features, and I’m instantly smitten. These unconventional men bring a certain level of interest and depth that the “perfect” ones often lack.
It’s not just about looks, though. It’s about the stories their faces tell. There’s something enticing about a face with character and a hint of volatility. Faces that aren’t mathematically perfect often carry a sense of unpredictability and danger that piques my curiosity.
In Hollywood, men with interesting faces have always been considered interesting themselves. Women, on the other hand, have faced an uphill battle when it comes to being appreciated for their talent rather than their looks. Thankfully, things are starting to change, and we’re seeing a greater variety of images of women projected in the media.
But let’s not forget that men still have it easier. If a man has an unusual face, we celebrate his talent. However, for women, it has been historically challenging to overcome society’s beauty standards and be recognized for their skills alone.
I’m thrilled to see this shift in Hollywood’s perception of male attractiveness, but I hope it extends to women as well. For now, count me on team Barry Keoghan, and I wouldn’t even turn Rowan Atkinson away. Call me unconventional, but traditional handsomeness just doesn’t rev my engine.
