Jonathan Glazer, known for his harrowing Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest,” is on an international awards tour. This presents an opportune moment to revisit his debut feature film, “Sexy Beast,” which remains a compact, funny, and philosophical take on the past’s refusal to stay in the past. However, the new adaptation of the same name, an eight-episode series on Paramount+, struggles to escape the shadow of its predecessor.
A Straightforward Prequel
This “Sexy Beast” serves as a prequel, with James McArdle taking on the role of Gal, a younger version of Ray Winstone’s character in the original film. Gal is a small-time thief from London’s East End, accompanied by his childhood friend Don (Emun Elliott). The series follows Gal’s journey, including his falling-out with Don, time in prison, and eventual marriage to Deedee (Sarah Greene).
A Lack of Originality
While some great shows have succeeded by adapting existing concepts, “Sexy Beast” dedicates itself to filling in backstory and answering questions that never occurred to fans of the original or newcomers to these characters. This focus on unnecessary details takes away from the tension and slick storytelling that made the original film great.
Missed Opportunities
The original “Sexy Beast” relied on arresting images and a unique vibe. Unfortunately, the prequel neglects these elements and instead focuses on the logistics of Gal, Don, and Deedee’s backstories. As a result, the series loses the sheer style that made the original so captivating.
Compelling Performances
Despite the series’ shortcomings, James McArdle brings an affable charm to his portrayal of Gal, while Emun Elliott attempts to recreate the ferociousness of Ben Kingsley’s Don. Stephen Moyer adds a reptilian menace as Teddy, the handler who recruits Gal and Don for a valuable heist.
Excessive Violence Overshadows the Story
One of the major issues with the series is its unnecessary and excessive violence. Graphic sexual assault and brutal beatings distract from the more intriguing aspects of “Sexy Beast” and diminish the impact of the story. The show loses sight of the criminal gang’s simple quest to stick it to the man by adding unnecessary emotional and physical stakes.
The first three episodes of “Sexy Beast” are available for streaming on Paramount+, with new episodes releasing weekly on Thursdays. For fans of the original film, this prequel may not live up to expectations.
