One person tragically lost their life and another sustained injuries in an avalanche that occurred on Wednesday morning at Palisades Tahoe, a ski resort located in Olympic Valley, California.
According to an update from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, the avalanche claimed one life and caused injuries. Thankfully, no other individuals have been reported missing thus far. As a result of this unfortunate incident, both sides of the mountain were closed for the remainder of the day.
The avalanche occurred on the Palisades side of the resort mountain, specifically above the GS bowl area of KT-22, as stated by the Sheriff’s Office. The Sierra Avalanche Center had warned of a potential avalanche risk due to a powerful winter storm in the area.
Video footage from Live Storms Media showed emergency vehicles, including fire trucks and police cars, on the snowy scene at the resort. Medical personnel were seen attending to patients inside the resort’s medical building. The extent of the injuries was significant, resulting in numerous entrapments and injuries. Olympic Valley Firefighters mentioned that at least one person was receiving CPR, while another was being treated for a broken leg.
The response to the avalanche was swift, with the Olympic Valley Fire Department promptly acting upon the reports. They called upon other agencies, including the Sheriff’s Office and Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, for assistance in the search and rescue mission. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
