The Hollywood Commission, led by Anita Hill, has released its 2022-2023 Entertainment Industry Survey report, revealing that employees in the entertainment industry are becoming more knowledgeable about workplace misconduct. However, the report also highlights the lack of significant changes in addressing and holding accountable those responsible for misconduct.

Increasing Awareness, But Little Change

According to the survey, there has been an overall increase in employees’ awareness of workplace misconduct. This is a positive development, as it indicates a shift in attitudes and values. The Hollywood Commission believes that this change in mindset will contribute to reducing instances of authority figures mistreating employees.

The Numbers Speak

The study found that 82% of respondents in 2023 are aware of unacceptable behaviors in the workplace, a 6% increase from 2020. Additionally, 74% of respondents in 2023 know how to report concerns about workplace misconduct, also a 6% increase from 2020. These numbers demonstrate that employees are better informed about what constitutes misconduct and how to address it.

Accountability Remains a Concern

Despite the growing awareness, most employees surveyed do not believe that powerful harassers will be held accountable for their actions towards those with less authority. Only 31% of the respondents have confidence in accountability measures within the industry. This indicates that there is still a long way to go in creating a positive and safe work environment for all.

Different Perspectives

The study highlights the impact of one’s demographic identity on their perception of the issue. White cisgender men, in particular, tend to view the entertainment industry as more welcoming compared to other groups. The survey shows that a majority of white cisgender men believe that significant progress has been made in preventing harassment and abuse in the industry. On the other hand, respondents from other demographic identities have a more skeptical outlook.

Work Still to Be Done

While the survey suggests progress in raising awareness of power abuse, it underscores the need for action and intervention against such misconduct in the workplace. It’s essential to acknowledge that attitudes towards work culture in the entertainment industry vary based on race, sexuality, gender, and other factors. Efforts must continue to bridge gaps in existing industry systems to ensure safe and respectful workplaces.

The Hollywood Commission is committed to addressing the harmful conduct highlighted in the survey. They plan to launch new programs in the coming year to make a meaningful impact. By collaborating with partner organizations, the commission aims to create a safer and more productive environment for all industry workers.
