In a surprising move, Audible, the audiobook and podcast division owned by Amazon, is set to lay off more than 100 employees, which accounts for approximately 5% of its workforce. This decision comes as other Amazon groups, including Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios, and Twitch, are also letting go of several hundred employees this week.
According to an audio memo sent by Audible CEO Bob Carrigan, the layoffs will not affect the company’s content teams. Carrigan explained that making these cuts was a result of careful consideration and that becoming leaner and more efficient is necessary for delivering top-notch audio storytelling to customers worldwide.
Acknowledging the impact these layoffs will have on those transitioning out of Audible and the remaining employees, Carrigan expressed gratitude for the valuable contributions of those leaving and assured the remaining staff that the decisions were made with the long-term success of the business in mind.
Carrigan took over as Audible CEO in 2019, succeeding Don Katz, who founded the company in 1995 and now serves as executive chairman. Amazon acquired Audible in 2008 in a deal worth approximately $300 million.
