Carlos Ayala

The fallout from the events of January 6, 2021, at the US Capitol continues as a Maryland Republican official resigns from the State Board of Elections following his arrest. Carlos Ayala, a member of the Maryland Republican Party, made the decision to step down to ensure that the electoral process remains unbiased and untainted.

Upholding Integrity

“The MDGOP believes in the 1st Amendment and in the American principle that one is innocent until proven guilty,” stated Nicole Beus Harris, Chairwoman of the state GOP. She emphasized that Ayala’s resignation was a voluntary action taken by Ayala himself. This move reflects his dedication to the integrity of the electoral system and his desire to prevent any distractions from impeding the electoral process.

Maryland Matters first reported Ayala’s resignation, which occurred on Thursday morning subsequent to his arrest on Tuesday. The video footage captured during the events of January 6 shows Ayala removing his flag from a window and proceeding towards a fire door. As the mob attempts to breach the door, an officer intervenes, using a police shield to block it. The officer then confiscates a black flag attached to a PVC pipe, while a PVC pipe is thrown by an unidentified individual. The video does not clearly show if Ayala was the person who threw the flagpole.

Later on, police body-worn camera footage reveals that Ayala is no longer in possession of the flag or flagpole. It is during this time that Ayala allegedly approaches the police line and urges others to join him. He is accompanied by two individuals identified as “Witness 1” and “Witness 2,” one of whom provided the FBI with video footage of an exchange between Ayala and these witnesses prior to his involvement near the broken windows.

Consequences of the Capitol Attack

Since the attack on the Capitol, over 1,200 individuals have been charged, with nearly 900 already convicted of various offenses ranging from unlawful parading to seditious conspiracy. The FBI continues to identify and pursue additional suspects involved in the riot, with numerous cases still in progress.
