The obsession with the Stanley Cup has officially infiltrated “Saturday Night Live”! In the latest episode, host Dakota Johnson took center stage alongside Heidi Gardner and Chloe Fineman. Sporting oversized Western hats and clutching their beloved Stanley Cups, they appeared to be on a ranch. The sketch kicked off with the trio outlining the criteria for owning a Stanley Cup – driving a big car, falling within the age range of 12 to 70, making daily trips to Target, and being “physically or at least spiritually” blonde.

Throughout the four-minute sketch, Johnson, Gardner, and Fineman playfully mock the iconic beverage container, subtly referencing recent headlines that have surrounded it, all while chanting together, “Big dumb cup.” With one audible slurp, Fineman sarcastically remarks, “Mm! You can really taste the bacteria!” and to add to the satire, Gardner adds, “I’m getting lead.”

In response to claims that Stanley Cups contain lead, Stanley addressed the issue last week. The company clarified that while lead is used in the manufacturing process, the cup needs to be damaged in order for the lead to be exposed. According to a Stanley spokesperson, each cup has a circular stainless steel barrier at the bottom, covering a pellet that contains lead. This pellet seals the cup’s vacuum insulation and is not accessible unless the barrier is compromised, which the spokesperson says is a “rare” occurrence.

In another humorous line, Fineman quips, “If your car explodes, you won’t survive. But your big dumb cup will.” This reference humorously alludes to a viral video from November 2023, where a car bursts into flames entirely, yet the Stanley Cup inside remains unscathed and still filled with ice.

The trio also pokes fun at the cup’s claim of being leak-proof, its numerous marketing strategies, and its colossal size. The sketch cleverly highlights the ongoing fascination with the Stanley Cup while delivering lighthearted commentary on its quirks and controversies.
