Can you imagine being caught in an avalanche, buried under feet of snow, with no way of escaping? That’s exactly what happened to Jason Parker, a snowboarder at Palisades Tahoe. In this gripping account, he shares his incredible survival story.
A Day on the Slopes
It was the first day that the KT-22 chairlift was open at Palisades Tahoe, and Jason Parker and his fiancée decided to take advantage of it. Despite the challenging weather conditions, they headed to the mountain. Little did they know that their day of snowboarding would turn into a fight for survival.
The Avalanche Strikes
As Parker and his partner made their way down the mountain, they encountered some slough, which they didn’t think much of. But just seconds later, an avalanche hit them with unimaginable force. Parker was swept off his feet and thrown onto his back, completely at the mercy of the snow.
Trapped Under the Snow
Parker found himself caught in a river of snow, desperately trying to stay afloat. As the avalanche picked up speed, he shouted for nearby skiers to keep an eye on him. But soon, he was flipped onto his stomach and began sliding head-first down the mountain. The snowslide finally came to a halt, and Parker found himself completely buried.
Fighting for Breath
Realizing he was running out of oxygen, Parker made a split-second decision. He punched a hole in the snow in front of his face to create an air pocket. Unable to move or hear anything outside, he knew his only hope was to be found by rescuers.
Rescue and Relief
After what felt like an eternity, a probe hit Parker’s back, and he heard the words he had been desperately waiting for: “Hey, we’ve got him.” Rescuers quickly dug him out, and he was finally able to breathe freely. Parker hugged one of the rescuers, overcome with gratitude and relief.
Grateful to Be Alive
As Parker reflected on his near-death experience, he couldn’t help but think of the man who lost his life in the same avalanche. His heart went out to him and the ski community. Parker considers himself extremely lucky to have come out of the incident with only a slightly injured knee.
A Lesson Learned
Parker holds no grudges against the ski patrol, acknowledging that they had done everything they could given the weather conditions. He credits his survival to the training he had received and expresses his gratitude to those involved in his rescue.
Moving Forward
Despite the trauma he experienced, Parker is determined to get back on the slopes. He plans to return to KT-22 once his knee has healed, eager to retrace his steps and understand exactly what happened to him. He refuses to let this incident deter him from doing what he loves.
