Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has announced that he is willing to work with former US President Donald Trump, despite previously criticizing him and calling him unfit to lead the world. In an interview with The Sun, he emphasized the importance of transatlantic ties and stated that personalities should not overshadow the cooperation between governments.
“There’s a very special relationship, always has been between the UK and US,” Sir Keir said. “That sits above the individuals who hold the positions of President and Prime Minister of their respective countries.”
Sir Keir’s statement is a significant departure from his earlier remarks about President Trump. When he first became Labour leader, Sir Keir questioned Trump’s ability to lead the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he now acknowledges the American people’s right to choose their President and has expressed his willingness to work with whoever is elected.
The relationship between the UK and the US is of great importance to Sir Keir. In a speech to the Fabian Society, he stated, “Our relationship with the US matters to me enormously. I’m anti-Trump but I’m pro-American.”
This change in stance aligns with Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s earlier statement that Labour will work with a Trump administration. Lammy emphasized the potential for collaboration on various issues, despite some differences.
It is worth noting that this revelation comes after fifty Labour MPs in 2019 called for the cancellation of Trump’s state visit due to concerns about his controversial statements and behavior. Labour MP Emily Thornberry even referred to Trump as a “racist” and a “sexual predator” before his visit.
Looking ahead, Trump is facing legal challenges, including multiple criminal indictments, and could potentially go on trial during the upcoming election campaign. Nevertheless, he remains the favorite to be the Republican candidate competing against President Joe Biden in the November contest.
