AN EX-MASTERCHEF finalist has been forced to shut down his restaurant after its monthly energy bill tripled to an eye-watering sum. Tony Rodd, who appeared on the BBC competition in 2015, made the difficult decision to close the Copper & Ink restaurant in Blackheath, southeast London.

The closure is a result of the soaring energy costs and other financial pressures faced by the couple. Tony and his wife Becky revealed that they had already increased prices due to the pandemic and rising expenses, which unfortunately led to a decline in customer numbers.

Earlier, Tony had expressed his concerns about an £80,000 energy bill, four times the restaurant’s previous monthly direct debit of £1,700. The overwhelming financial burden left him sleepless, fearing for the future of his establishment.

The couple said energy bills had drained the restaurant's coffers

In a heartfelt statement on Twitter, Tony and Becky expressed their gratitude to the community and their deep sorrow over the closure. They emphasized the need for privacy as they go through the grieving process and settle the restaurant’s affairs.

This closure marks the end of a remarkable five-year journey for the duo. Copper & Ink was an integral part of the Blackheath Village community, and Tony and Becky will miss the regular interaction with their valued customers.

Despite their best efforts, the financial strain became insurmountable, leading to the unfortunate closure of Copper & Ink. The couple’s decision to prioritize their well-being and financial stability is a testament to their courage.

EDF Energy, the supplier whose exponentially increased bills were the final blow for the restaurant, has yet to respond to the situation.

We wish Tony and Becky all the best in their future endeavors and hope that they find new opportunities to showcase their culinary talents.
