Now that Ryan Gosling’s viral hit power ballad “I’m Just Ken” is nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars, everyone is wondering if Gosling will perform the song live on stage. Variety’s Mark Malkin caught up with Mark Ronson, the producer of the “Barbie” soundtrack and co-writer of “I’m Just Ken,” on the 2024 Grammys red carpet to get some insight into Gosling’s potential performance. Ronson, however, revealed that he is still unsure whether Gosling will take the stage or not.
A Dream Performance
During Variety’s “On the Carpet, presented by DIRECTV,” Ronson expressed his excitement about the possibility of Gosling’s live performance at the Oscars: “That would be great! Did he confirm to you? I want to know… it’s my dream!”
No Replacement for Gosling
When asked if they would consider substituting another singer if Gosling declines to perform, Ronson quickly dismissed the idea. He firmly stated, “No. I think if Ryan doesn’t do it, then we’re not doing it.”
Gosling’s Hesitations
Before “I’m Just Ken” became an official Oscar nominee, Gosling playfully avoided the topic of a live performance during an interview with W Magazine. He jokingly questioned the logistics, asking about payment, transportation, and other details associated with singing at the prestigious awards show.
The Barbie Nominees
“I’m Just Ken” is not the only song from the “Barbie” soundtrack to receive an Oscar nomination. The other nominated track is “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas, which already won the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media. The competition between these two songs adds another layer of anticipation to the upcoming Oscars.
Greta Gerwig’s Snub
During the Grammys red carpet interview, Ronson was also asked about Greta Gerwig’s surprising omission from the Best Director category at the Oscars. Gosling had previously expressed his disappointment about the snub, and Ronson shared a similar sentiment. He praised Gerwig’s unique vision and the world she created with her film. Despite the snub, he mentioned that Gerwig was still nominated for the screenplay and picture categories and appreciated her positive attitude.
If Gosling does perform “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars, we can expect it to happen on Sunday, March 10, during the 2024 Academy Awards. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting musical moment!
