What Drives Location Choices
Tax incentives have long been a significant factor in the decision-making process for location managers. As James Lin pointed out, these incentives often determine where filming takes place. Not only do they benefit smaller film projects, but they also help stimulate local economies. William Doyle emphasized the importance of showcasing lesser-known locations, while Lori Balton highlighted the allure of finding unexplored and quirky spots that offer directors a sense of uniqueness.

The Logistics and Sustainability Factor
Besides stunning landscapes and appealing vistas, logistics play a crucial role in choosing a location. Access, infrastructure, and the ability to accommodate large crews are critical considerations. For Paramount’s Robert Ortiz, finding places with adequate infrastructure is of utmost importance. But sustainability is a growing concern as well. German film commissioner Anja Metzger highlighted Germany’s efforts to enforce sustainability criteria for shoots. Spain’s Film Commission has also developed an AI-powered search engine to streamline location sourcing, making it easier for location managers to find the perfect spot.

Spain’s International Shoot Scene
Spain’s thriving film industry has seen significant growth in recent years, attracting international productions and boosting the country’s economy. In 2021, Spain hosted 49 international film shoots, bringing in a direct investment of €288.2 million ($317.0 million). Regions like the Canary Islands and Catalonia played a significant role in this success. Spain’s own content, such as the hit series “Money Heist,” has also contributed to the country’s reputation as a filming hotspot.
