Triple Killer Valdo Calocane Receives Benefits While in Secure Hospital

In a shocking development, Valdo Calocane, a triple killer, is entitled to claim thousands of pounds in benefits while being held in a secure hospital instead of serving time in prison. Calocane, a paranoid schizophrenic, brutally murdered 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, as well as school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, in Nottingham last year.

A Controversial Entitlement

Prisoners are generally not eligible for state benefits. However, patients in secure psychiatric hospitals, like Calocane in high-security Ashworth Hospital in Merseyside, can receive welfare payments of up to £360 a month. This entitlement has sparked fury among the victims’ families and the public, who question the fairness of the system.

If the judge had issued a section 45 or 47 order, requiring Calocane’s transfer to prison upon release from the hospital, he would not have been eligible for benefits.

Outrage and a Call for Change

Emma, Barnaby’s mother, expresses her devastation and sense of injustice caused by the knowledge that the man who took her son’s life not only has taxpayers’ money spent on his confinement but can also accumulate a small fortune in state benefits. She, along with others affected by Calocane’s actions, strongly believes that this law needs urgent review.

The tragic loss of their loved ones has already burdened the victims’ families with immeasurable grief. Now, they must also grapple with the knowledge that their perpetrator benefits financially from the state.
