Indian actor and politician Vijayakanth, known affectionately as “Captain,” has died at the age of 71. The beloved actor, who had been battling pneumonia, passed away on Thursday in Chennai. Vijayakanth, who tested positive for COVID-19 recently, was receiving treatment at the MIOT International Hospital.

Vijayakanth gained widespread popularity and earned the nickname “Captain” after his remarkable performance in his 100th film, “Captain Prabhakaran” (1991). He made his acting debut in 1979 and soon garnered a reputation for portraying righteous characters that fought against corruption and injustice. His patriotic roles earned him the title “Puratchi Kalingar” (revolutionary artist).

Throughout his illustrious career, Vijayakanth appeared in 154 films, including notable ones like “Sattam Oru Iruttarai” (1981), “Amman Kovil Kizhakale” (1986), and “Sethupathi IPS” (1994). His final role was a cameo appearance alongside his son Shanmuga Pandian in “Sagaptham” (2015).

In addition to his acting achievements, Vijayakanth ventured into politics in 2005 by forming the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party. Although the party won only one seat in the 2006 Tamil Nadu state assembly elections, it gained significant support and became the main opposition party in 2011, with Vijayakanth serving as the leader of the opposition. However, his party did not achieve the same success in the 2016 assembly elections.

Condolences poured in from all corners, including from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a heartfelt message, Modi expressed his sadness at the passing of Vijayakanth, praising his iconic performances and dedication to public service. The prime minister also reminisced about his friendship with the late actor and extended his sympathies to Vijayakanth’s family, fans, and followers.

Vijayakanth’s demise leaves a void in the Tamil film industry and political landscape that will be difficult to fill. His legacy as a versatile actor and an influential politician will continue to inspire future generations.
