Jurgen Klinsmann’s stint as the head coach of the South Korean national team has come to an end. In a surprising move, South Korea has decided to part ways with the German football legend after just 12 months in charge. Klinsmann’s contract was initially supposed to run until the 2026 World Cup, but the Asian Cup exit and team discord have led to his departure.
South Korea’s hopes of triumph in the Asian Cup were dashed when they suffered a heartbreaking loss in the semi-finals. The defeat prolonged their 64-year wait for the coveted title. In addition, reports emerged regarding conflicts among some of the team’s top players.
Captain Son Heung-min, the star of the national team and Tottenham Hotspur, reportedly dislocated his finger during a dispute with his teammates just before the shocking 2-0 loss to Jordan in the semi-finals. It is said that some younger members of the squad rushed through their dinner to engage in a game of ping pong. Son, however, was displeased with their early departure, as team meals are usually an opportunity for bonding.
An exchange of words escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in the dislocation of Son’s finger. The clashing incident further diminished South Korea’s chances of success in the tournament. Although Klinsmann initially stated that he had no intention of resigning, just nine days later, football officials announced that he had run out of time to turn things around.
Hwangbo Kwan of the Korea Football Association stated, “We’ve reached a consensus that Klinsmann cannot exercise his leadership as national team head coach for various reasons and that a change of leadership is necessary.” Klinsmann’s resume includes leading Germany to a third-place finish in the 2006 World Cup and guiding the USA to the knockout stages of the 2014 tournament. Prior to his role with South Korea, he had a brief ten-week spell with Bundesliga side Hertha BSC four years ago.
South Korea entered the Asian Cup as one of the favorites but fell short, managing to score only three goals before being eliminated in the semi-finals. They won just one match in regular time and were just 90 seconds away from elimination in the second round before a last-minute equalizer against Saudi Arabia led them to victory in a penalty shootout.
Son, the team’s captain, expressed his disappointment following the defeat to Jordan, saying, “I’m devastated about this result. Jordan has had an amazing journey in this tournament, and they deserve it. They’re fighting until the end, and it’s very disappointing for us.” Ultimately, hosts Qatar claimed the title by defeating Jordan 3-1 in the final, securing back-to-back victories.
