The staggering amount Chelsea spent on transfers in 2023 has been revealed, but unfortunately, their performance on the pitch hasn’t matched their monetary investment.

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake took charge of the West London club in 2022, they have spent over £1 billion on new additions. However, this lavish spending has not translated into success on the field.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, Chelsea found themselves sitting in ninth place in the Premier League under the management of Graham Potter. With only 24 points from their opening 15 matches, their average of 1.6 points per game was far from impressive.

In an attempt to turn their fortunes around, Chelsea splurged again in January, signing Mykhailo Mudryk for a potential £88 million and Enzo Fernandez for a potential £110 million. However, the managerial changes that followed, with Frank Lampard returning as interim, did nothing to improve their league position. They ultimately finished the season in 12th place, their worst Premier League finish since 1993-94.

Hoping for a fresh start in 2023, Chelsea appointed Mauricio Pochettino as manager and made several new signings. The club spent £173 million on midfielders Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, while also investing heavily in the attack.

Although the arrival of these new players brought renewed optimism, they have struggled to produce results. Strikers Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson, who were signed for a combined £86 million, have only managed to score ten goals between them in all competitions. On the other hand, Cole Palmer, a £42.5 million signing from Manchester City, has made a significant impact, scoring ten goals, including a brace in a recent 2-1 win against Luton Town.

However, despite ending 2023 with a victory, Chelsea finds themselves in a worse position in the Premier League compared to a year ago. They currently sit in tenth place with 28 points from 20 matches, averaging only 1.4 points per game.

This regression is discouraging for Boehly, who has spent a total of £755.6 million on new signings since January 1. The club’s transfers have cost them an eye-watering £2.03 million every day in the past year. With such a significant investment, Chelsea will undoubtedly be expecting a significant improvement in their results.
