The race is on! Premier League rivals Brighton and Crystal Palace are locked in a battle to secure the services of the highly sought-after Kieran McKenna. Currently the boss at Ipswich, McKenna, 37, is not only leading the Tractor Boys’ charge for promotion but is also on track to make a name for himself in the top flight.
McKenna has certainly left a lasting impression after his successful stint as a coach at Manchester United. Brighton has already included him on their emergency list, just in case their current manager, Roberto De Zerbi, is tempted elsewhere. The Seagulls have a reputation for identifying promising managerial talent, and McKenna’s attacking style would be a perfect fit for their setup. With bigger clubs at home and abroad eyeing their highly-rated Italian gaffer, it’s no wonder Brighton is keen to secure McKenna’s services.
Crystal Palace is also interested in McKenna, as they search for a long-term successor to their current manager, Roy Hodgson, who is 76 years old. Ideally, Palace would make their move in the summer, as they are fully behind Hodgson for now and don’t want to disrupt their promotion push. McKenna, unlike other potential candidates, doesn’t have a sacking on his CV, making him an even more attractive option for the Eagles.
Ipswich, on the other hand, has a compensation clause of around £4 million in McKenna’s contract. This figure is unlikely to deter either Brighton or Crystal Palace, should they make a move for him.
Currently sitting in second place in the Championship table, Ipswich is just eight points behind league leaders Leicester. Their impressive performance this season suggests they are on track for promotion to the Premier League.
