Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister, is taking the opportunity to hit the road this week with a strong message for voters. He warns that if Sir Keir Starmer is elected, he will raise taxes, labeling him as “economically illiterate.” In what seems like the beginning of the 2024 general election campaign, Sunak aims to highlight Starmer’s weak stance on the economy.

A Battle for Economic Competence

Sunak’s campaign to sway voters will commence with a UK tour, starting in the East Midlands where he plans to engage in a question and answer session. On the same day, Starmer will be setting out his stall with a speech in the South West.

In his New Year message, Sunak announced upcoming tax cuts and a continued reduction in debt, stating, “Inflation is set to fall further. We’re going further by reducing debt and cutting taxes.” One of the key tax cuts being promoted is the 2p reduction in National Insurance, which will take effect on Saturday.

A No10 source disclosed that Sunak will be targeting working families during his campaign stops. Referring to Labour’s pledge to allocate £28 billion annually to green projects until 2030, the source highlighted the stark economic contrast between the two parties, stating, “Rishi’s strongest asset is his economic experience – in stark contrast to Sir Keir’s economically illiterate plan.”

Labour’s Response and Strategy

Labour, in response, criticized the Tories for raising taxes 25 times, resulting in the highest tax burden since the Second World War. They also accused Sunak of conveniently forgetting the billions he allocated to associates and implementing a reckless budget.

Labour’s strategy for the upcoming election is based on four key points: the need for change in the country, the failures of the Conservative Party, the transformation of Labour under Sir Keir’s leadership, and their plan to “get Britain’s future back.”

It remains to be seen how these campaigns will evolve and ultimately sway the minds of voters. The battle for economic competence and the promise of a brighter future for the UK will undoubtedly be key themes throughout the election season.
