What a shocker! One of the most influential rock bands of the 90s, Rage Against the Machine, has just dropped a bombshell – they will never perform live again. Known for their politically-charged lyrics and massive riffs, this band was a force to be reckoned with.
Three decades after their groundbreaking debut album, the band has made a shocking statement. In a heartfelt message, drummer Brad Wilk wrote, “I want to let you know that RATM (Tim, Zack, Tom, and I) will not be touring or playing live again. I’m sorry for those of you who have been waiting for this to happen. I really wish it was.”
It’s hard to believe that their last live performance was in August 2022 at Madison Square Garden, New York. This came just a month after frontman Zack de la Rocha injured his leg on stage in Chicago, forcing him to perform seated for the remaining tour dates.
The band’s future had been uncertain throughout the last year. Guitarist Tom Morello said, “If there are Rage shows, if there are not Rage shows, you’ll hear from the band. I do not know. When there is news, it will come from a collective statement from the band. There is no news.”
Interestingly, when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year, only Tom attended the ceremony. Despite their differing views on the honor, Morello expressed deep gratitude for his bandmates and their fans, emphasizing the importance of carrying on the band’s mission and message.
Rage Against the Machine released three highly successful albums in the 90s and went on a hiatus after their cover album, “Renegades,” in 2000. Although they regrouped occasionally, with their first comeback tour in the late noughties, no new music followed. Who can forget when their expletive-laden track, “Killing In The Name,” broke The X Factor’s four-year stranglehold on the Christmas number one position in 2009?
And just like that, the curtain falls on this legendary rock band’s live performances. While we may never witness their explosive energy on stage again, their music will continue to inspire generations to come.
