Disney+ has decided to cancel the series “American Born Chinese” after its first season, as reported by Variety. Although Disney had high hopes for the show’s creative direction, the viewership numbers did not meet expectations, leading to the cancellation. However, the producers are determined to find the series a new home and will be exploring other outlets.
“American Born Chinese” made its debut on Disney+ in May. The series, based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, follows the journey of a typical American teenager whose life takes a transformative turn when he befriends the son of a mythological god.
The cast of the show included talented actors such as Ben Wang, Michelle Yeoh, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Jimmy Liu, Ke Huy Quan, Sydney Taylor, and Daniel Wu. Critics praised the series, and its first season garnered an impressive 94% approval rating based on 51 reviews.
Kelvin Yu developed the series for television and served as the executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton directed the series and also served as an executive producer. Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, and Gene Luen Yang were among the other executive producers. The production of “American Born Chinese” was carried out by 20th Television.
Interestingly, the news of the cancellation coincided with the release of another series called “The Brothers Sun” on Netflix, which also stars Michelle Yeoh. Furthermore, Ke Huy Quan recently appeared in Season 2 of the popular Marvel series “Loki” on Disney+. Destin Daniel Cretton is currently involved in the development of the upcoming Marvel-Disney+ series “Wonder Man” as a co-creator, director, and executive producer.
