Four years ago, Gabriel Leone made waves in the Brazilian movie “Piedade” when he portrayed a character named Marlon Brando. Although not playing the iconic American actor, Leone’s striking resemblance drew attention. Fast forward to his English-language debut in Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” where he embodies racing driver Alfonso de Portago, a charismatic sportsman who emulates “The Wild One” himself.
Channeling Brando
According to Leone, the script for “Ferrari” describes his character as Brando-esque from the get-go. Having already seen most of Brando’s films, Leone dove back into Brando’s early works to prepare for the role. He explains, “It was a big reference for me — the way my character dresses, but also his confidence, his energy, the way he faces the situations.”
Immersing in the Racing World
However, Leone believes that even more impactful was director Michael Mann’s insistence on immersing the actors in the world of racing. Mann wanted them to experience being behind the wheel and feel like real drivers, rather than relying solely on professional stunt drivers. This approach helped Leone connect with his character on a deeper level, understanding the thrill and addiction that comes with racing. Leone shares, “You start connecting through the adrenaline rush — you want more and more and see how people get addicted to that because it makes you feel so alive.”
Overcoming Challenges
Leone initially approached driving defensively, much like one would do on regular streets. However, through the guidance of a professional driver, Leone gradually changed his mindset, becoming more aggressive, braking later, and occasionally relinquishing control to ultimately regain it. His dedication paid off as he reached speeds of over 110 miles per hour on the track.
Adjusting to Hollywood
While shooting “Ferrari,” Leone encountered other unfamiliar experiences. He had never had a personal trailer before, as Brazilian productions usually have collective rooms where actors interact. Adjusting to the solitude of a trailer was a learning curve for him. Additionally, watching himself act in a Hollywood film, especially in English, took some getting used to for Leone. At the New York Film Festival, he analyzed his performance with a critical eye. However, Mann’s direction and the way he captured de Portago’s final moments on screen left Leone in awe, shifting his perspective from self-analysis to astonishment.
Pursuing Dreams
Drawing from his experiences on the Italian race tracks, Leone is now channeling that energy into an upcoming Brazilian Netflix biopic about the legendary F1 driver Ayrton Senna, titled “Senna.” Although eagerly embracing his Brazilian roots, Leone also aspires to continue acting in American films. Given the chance, he would eagerly take on the challenge of portraying Brando himself. Leone admires Brando as the greatest actor of all time and considers him a significant influence. He states, “It would be an honor for me to try to play him.”
Leone’s journey in “Ferrari” has not only fueled his passion for acting but also unearthed his desire to tackle iconic figures like Marlon Brando. With his impressive range and dedication, Gabriel Leone is undoubtedly a rising star to watch.
