Nearly every Republican presidential candidate has declined the invitation to participate in Iowa’s oldest minority-focused presidential forum, despite their optimism about improving the party’s performance with voters of color in 2024. The Iowa Black and Brown Presidential Forum, organized by Wayne Ford and Mary Campos, offers a platform for candidates to address issues important to communities of color.

The forum, which has been held for 40 years, has seen participation from past Democratic presidential candidates such as Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Al Gore. However, no Republican candidate has ever taken part. Ford, a former Democratic state representative, expressed disappointment that even though invitations were extended to both parties, Republicans have consistently declined.

Exit polls following Donald Trump’s election in 2016 showed Republicans making gains with Black and Latino voters. Despite this, the Republican forum for 2024 was canceled due to a low number of committed participants. The lack of participation from Republicans is puzzling, considering the increasing voter turnout among Black and Latino communities, as well as the potential to win over more of these voters in the upcoming general election.

The only Republican candidate to offer a firm commitment was Ryan Binkley, who emphasized the need for reconciliation and solutions for urban America. However, the other Republican candidates did not respond to invitations. Former President Trump’s campaign spokesperson suggested that his lead in the polls was a reason for declining events with other candidates.

The decision by Republican candidates not to attend the forum is seen as a missed opportunity to engage with voters of color. Ford believes that reaching out to the middle ground, including independents, Blacks, and Hispanics, is crucial for Republican success. There have been few attempts by Republican candidates to hold events in predominantly Spanish-speaking communities in Iowa.

Despite the cancellation of the forum, organizers remain committed to fostering a platform that resonates with their audience and shapes the national dialogue on issues affecting minority communities. The forum has historically provided a valuable opportunity for candidates to address and listen to the concerns of communities of color.
