Emmerdale fans are taking to social media to voice their discontent over what they perceive as a double standard in the way accidents are portrayed on the popular soap opera. In the recent New Year’s Day episode, viewers were shocked when Heath Hope tragically died in a car crash. However, fans couldn’t help but notice that the severity of the accident seemed much less than that of another character, Chloe Harris, who miraculously survived a similar incident.
The episode showed Cathy Hope, Heath’s twin sister, behind the wheel of the car just moments before the tragedy occurred. The crash itself was not depicted on screen, but viewers saw Cathy swerve into another vehicle. Heath sustained severe injuries and, despite the efforts of his father Bob and stepmother Wendy, he ultimately passed away at the hospital.
Emmerdale fans immediately flocked to social media to express their confusion and dissatisfaction with the soap’s handling of the accident. Comparisons were drawn to the previous collision involving Chloe, Mark, and Charity, which many believed had been given more attention and seemed more dire in nature. One Twitter user wrote, “Heath in a car that lightly crashed into a wall Dead Chloe who fell off the side of a cliff in a car,” while another commented, “Nothing makes sense in this show anymore, jumps from one incoherent unconnected story to another…. but now with added ominous music.”
This is not the first time that Emmerdale fans have criticized the show for its storyline choices. During Super Soap Week, fans grew weary of the ongoing saga involving Charity, Mack, and Chloe, labeling it “tedious.” After a car crash, Mack chose to save Charity instead of Chloe, only for Chloe to survive and be airlifted to the hospital. Fans had expressed their boredom with the storyline several months prior.
