Every now and then, a cold case comes to light and captures our attention. The recent identification of a decapitated woman found in a California vineyard nearly 13 years ago is one such case that has left investigators and the public intrigued. Thanks to advancements in DNA testing, officials have finally been able to identify the victim as Ada Beth Kaplan, a 64-year-old woman from Canyon Country, California.
A Gruesome Discovery
On March 29, 2011, the lifeless body of Ada Beth Kaplan was discovered at the Grapevine Vineyard in Arvin, California. Shockingly, she was found without a head or thumbs, and her body appeared to have been intentionally arranged in a particular way. It was a haunting and disturbing crime scene that left investigators baffled.
Years of Uncertainty
Despite their best efforts, previous attempts to identify the victim were unsuccessful. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office revealed that two out-of-county missing persons cases were ruled out through DNA analysis, leaving investigators at a dead end. The case remained shrouded in mystery, and Ada Beth Kaplan’s true identity remained a secret.

Breakthrough in Identification
In February 2020, a breakthrough occurred in another cold case, which gave hope to the investigation. Working with the DNA Doe Project, the Kern County Coroner’s Office successfully identified a Jane Doe from 1980 using genealogy. Building upon this success, the DNA Doe Project began creating a genetic profile and family tree for the unidentified headless woman found in the vineyard.
After extensive research, in July 2023, two family members living on the East Coast were identified. They provided DNA samples for comparison, which ultimately led to the identification of the victim as Ada Beth Kaplan. Surprisingly, detectives discovered that no missing person report had ever been filed for her.
The Quest for Justice Continues
While the identification of Ada Beth Kaplan marks a significant breakthrough in this long-standing case, there are still many unanswered questions. The cause of her death remains undetermined, and no suspects have been arrested in connection with her tragic demise. The investigation will undoubtedly continue as investigators work tirelessly to bring closure to this heinous crime.
As we reflect on this disturbing case, it serves as a reminder of the significance of modern forensic techniques in unveiling the truths hidden in cold cases. The ability to bring closure to families and hold perpetrators accountable is a testament to the dedication and expertise of law enforcement agencies.
