In a shocking incident that unfolded inside a Nevada courtroom, a man has been charged with attempted murder after leaping at a judge over the bench. Deobra Delone Redden, 30, is now facing multiple allegations, including battery on a protected person, extortion by threat, and intimidating a public officer. The incident, which occurred on January 3, was captured on courtroom security video and has shaken the legal community.

A Taste of Justice

The attack on Judge Mary Kay Holthus came after she had expressed concerns about Redden’s prior criminal record. Recognizing the need for consequences beyond virtual freedom, which Redden had sought in an unrelated case of attempted battery with substantial harm, Judge Holthus wanted to ensure that justice was served. Little did she know that her decision would trigger a terrifying assault.

A Shocking Leap

In a brazen display of aggression, Redden vaulted over a defense table, dove across the judge’s bench, and landed directly on top of Holthus. He repeatedly slammed her head against a wall, struck her, and even pulled out strands of her hair. This frightening attack left the judge with visible injuries and in immediate need of medical attention.

Chaos and Consequences

As chaos erupted in the courtroom, court officials, including the courtroom marshal, Shane Brandon, intervened to subdue Redden. Brandon ultimately dislocated his shoulder and sustained a face laceration during the scuffle. Additionally, a corrections officer and a law clerk involved in the melee also suffered injuries. Prosecutors have further alleged that Redden spit on a law enforcement officer in the midst of the violence.

Justice Prevails

Despite the shocking attack, Judge Holthus demonstrated remarkable resilience. The very next day, she returned to her courtroom and, on Monday, completed the sentencing. Redden has now been ordered to spend up to four years in prison for the unrelated baseball bat attack he was involved in last year. Chief Judge Jerry Wiese, who witnessed the assault, described Redden’s action as “Supermanning over a judicial bench” and emphasized that such behavior was unprecedented.

Seeking Answers

Although the motive behind the attack remains unclear, details from the defendant’s arrest report shed light on Redden’s mindset. According to the report, Redden told officers searching him after the attack that he had attempted to kill the judge because he was having a bad day. The incident serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers faced by those in the legal system who work tirelessly to uphold justice.

In the face of adversity, Judge Mary Kay Holthus and her colleagues showed exceptional bravery and determination. Their commitment to the pursuit of justice remains unwavering, and their resilience serves as an inspiration to us all.
