Mallrats

Shannen Doherty recently had a candid conversation with director Kevin Smith on her podcast “Let’s Be Clear,” where she revealed how his cult movie “Mallrats” had a detrimental impact on her film career. Despite being beloved by fans, the film performed poorly at the box office when it was initially released in 1995.

Doherty expressed her thoughts on the movie, saying, “That’s the interesting thing about ‘Mallrats,’ right? It wasn’t a box office success.” To this, Smith replied, “Oh, it died.” Doherty agreed, adding, “So did my film career. That was it.”

At the time of “Mallrats,” Doherty was already well-known for her roles in “Heathers” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Smith even acknowledged during the podcast that it was largely Doherty’s involvement that led to the film’s greenlighting.

When asked if she went on to make another feature film after “Mallrats,” Doherty replied, “No, that was it. People literally thought that I was carrying the movie, so therefore it was considered a box office failure solely because of me. There was no film career after that, which was a little brutal.”

Reflecting on the situation, Smith later admitted, “She’s right, man. If this works, here goes the movie career. And it really did not. Boy, I apologize for that.”

Interestingly, “Mallrats” eventually found its audience and experienced a ten-year ascent to become a cult classic. Smith mentioned that over the years, numerous industry colleagues and peers, including Elizabeth Olsen, expressed their admiration for the film.

During the podcast, both Smith and Doherty expressed their willingness to make a sequel to “Mallrats.” Smith even mentioned that they already have a script and said, “When are we doing ‘Mallrats 2?’ I’m game.”

While “Mallrats” may have had a negative impact on Doherty’s film career initially, it’s clear that the film’s legacy has evolved and continues to resonate with fans. As Doherty and Smith consider a sequel, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this cult classic.
