The Tory rebels are making a bold move to strengthen the Rwanda plan, calling it the party’s final opportunity to put an end to illegal immigration by sea. Spearheaded by Robert Jenrick, the rebels are urging Chancellor Rishi Sunak to ramp up the Bill, emphasizing that there will be no second chance if it falls apart.
Jenrick, a former immigration minister, is leading a group of 30 right-wing backbenchers who believe that the legislation should automatically overrule European judges. Despite the government introducing the Nationality and Borders Bill and the Illegal Migration Act in recent years, illegal immigration remains a massive problem.
According to Tory MP Miriam Cates, the Rwanda Bill, which will be debated in the Commons next week, needs to finally address the issue head-on. Cates emphasizes that in order to satisfy not only the Conservative Party but the entire country, the legislation must work effectively. She fears that failure to control illegal immigration could be detrimental to the party’s reputation and the overall well-being of the nation.
“So really, we should all be united about wanting to make this bill work,” she concludes.
The urgency expressed by the Tory rebels reflects the gravity of the situation. With illegal immigration continuing to pose a significant threat, the party sees this as a crucial moment to tackle the issue head-on. The effectiveness of the Rwanda plan will have far-reaching consequences, not only for the Conservative Party but for the entire nation.
