Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made a bold move to address the issue of illegal immigration by seizing control of Shelby Park, a public park located in Eagle Pass, a town along the U.S.-Mexico border. The park, situated on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande, has become a focal point for immigration-related controversies in recent months.

In a video posted on Facebook, Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas expressed his surprise and disappointment at the governor’s decision to take over the park without any input from the city. He emphasized that the city did not request or want this action. Salinas received a call from a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) official on Wednesday morning, informing him that the state was assuming “full control” of the park indefinitely.

Earlier this year, the park stirred up heated debate when Mayor Salinas declared it private, enabling state DPS troopers to arrest migrants crossing there for trespassing. However, the city later rescinded the declaration due to backlash from residents.

Governor Abbott’s spokesperson, Renae Eze, stated that the state would employ “every tool and strategy” available to address the surge in border crossings, which she attributed to President Joe Biden’s policies.
