Nerea Barros, the talented Spanish actress known for her roles in “Marshland” and “The Gypsy Bride,” is set to make her directorial feature debut with “The Coast” (“La Costa”). The film, written by Barros herself, will be introduced to the market at the 2024 Malaga Festival Fund & Co-Production Event (MAFF) in March.

A Bridge Between Fiction and Non-Fiction

According to Barros, “The Coast” will be an experimental film that explores the intersection of fiction and non-fiction. It will delve into themes such as the legacy of the elderly, climate change, and the empowerment of women. By transforming her anxieties into a visual art form, Barros aims to create a different, sensitive, and international cinematic experience.

Key Cast: Elderlies and Animals

The film will feature a diverse cast, including elderlies and animals. Barros emphasizes the significance of the elderlies as bearers of essential legacies and their role in bridging tradition and art. The animals, including a wolf, a horse, two flamingos, an eagle, two chameleons, and a white heron, will also play a vital part in the narrative. Together, they will reclaim their land and raise their voices alongside other nearly extinct animals, fighting for survival.

An Experimental Edge

Drawing on her previous work on “Memory,” Barros is expected to bring formal innovation and resonant visuals to “The Coast.” Shot and set in the Aral Sea, which was once one of the largest lakes in the world, “Memory” captured the devastating ecological impact of human intervention. Barros transformed the landscape into a character itself, showcasing the beauty and consequences of progress.

Production Details

“The Coast” is set to begin production in September 2024 and will span until May 2025. Madrid-based production company Cólera Films is behind the project, with additional support from Siesta Producciones and Mediterráneo Media Entertainment. The team plans to involve a small production company from Galicia, Barros’ native region, and collaborate with a larger Spanish production house for international co-production opportunities in Latin America and Europe.

Preserving Memories through Cinema

Barros’ directorial debut promises to be a unique and thought-provoking film, capturing the essence of her artistic vision. By embracing experimental techniques and addressing pressing issues, she aims to make a lasting impact on audiences worldwide. Barros believes that memories should not be forgotten but cherished, and she intends to bring this message to life in “The Coast.”
