Fantasia has just dropped the music video for her latest single, “Superpower (I),” featured in the musical film “The Color Purple.” The song, written and produced by The-Dream, is a contender for the best original song Oscar. Directed by Taylor Fauntleroy, the video showcases Fantasia singing alongside her younger self through the use of AI technology.

A Symbolic Ballad of Fantasia’s Career

In the visually stunning video, Fantasia, adorned in a stunning silver and black gown, harmonizes with her 19-year-old self, dressed in the iconic red dress from her memorable 2004 “American Idol” performance of “Summertime.” This soaring ballad serves as an anthem for Fantasia’s two-decade journey, from reality competition star to the award-winning lead of “The Color Purple.”

A Personal Connection

“This song holds deep meaning not only for ‘The Color Purple’ story but also for my personal life experiences,” says Fantasia. She shares a profound connection with Celie, the character she portrays in the film. Fantasia expresses her gratitude to The-Dream for writing a song that resonates with her so deeply. She hopes that the song will move listeners just as it moved her.

Cutting-Edge Visual Effects

The music video’s stunning visual effects were brought to life by Joe Plaete, the visual effects supervisor from generative AI company Metaphysic. Warner Bros. Pictures, WaterTower Music, and gamma have released the video for “Superpower (I).”

Looking Beyond Superficial Powers

During a Q&A session in November, Fantasia shared her emotional journey recording the song with The-Dream. She admits that she cried through the entire second verse, astonished by the depth of his understanding of her life. “A lot of us don’t see our superpowers when we’re going through difficult times,” Fantasia explains. She expresses gratitude for being able to recognize her own superpowers now.
