The football community is outraged after an appalling banner mocking the death of Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was displayed ahead of a match. The offensive poster was removed by the police from the M69, Coventry junction, after it referred to the tragic incident at the King Power Stadium in 2018.

Disgust Over Insensitive Display

Photos circulating on social media show the banner featuring an image of the helicopter on which Mr. Srivaddhanaprabha was travelling, engulfed in flames. Alongside the insensitive image, a message that read, “Welcome to Cov,” was displayed as a match between the two Championship teams commenced.

Swift Action Taken

The banners were reported to West Midlands Police (WMP) and promptly taken down. Coventry City FC Police, a unit within WMP, expressed their disappointment on X, stating, “There is legislation in place that covers tragedy chanting, including the displaying of offensive banners.”

Condemnation From Both Clubs

Both Coventry City Football Club and Leicester City Football Club were quick to condemn the abuse and have pledged to collaborate with the police to identify those responsible for creating and displaying the offensive banners.

Coventry City FC issued a statement asserting their commitment to taking appropriate action against those involved. They made it clear that such behavior has no place in football or society and that the perpetrators will be banned from their football club.

Leicester City released a statement expressing their disappointment in the disrespectful actions of a minority of opposition supporters. They emphasized that such behavior goes against the values of respect and unity that football should represent. Leicester City also expressed gratitude for Coventry City and the wider football community’s support in condemning these actions and bringing the incident to the attention of the relevant authorities.

The investigation into this incident continues, with all parties working together to ensure that those responsible are appropriately dealt with.
