Powerhouse “Saturday Night Live” alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler stole the show at the Emmys as they revived their iconic “Weekend Update” co-anchor gig. The duo received thunderous applause even before their segment began.
Hilarious Zingers
As presenters for the Emmy award for live variety special, Fey and Poehler couldn’t resist throwing in some zingers. Standing in front of the “Weekend Update” set, they delivered their clever remarks:
- Poehler took a jab at the lengthy runtime of the Oscars, saying, “The only show that’s longer than when they air ‘Titanic’ with commercials on TBS.”
- Fey, on behalf of the absent Chris Rock, quipped, “Chris could be here tonight, but if he wins, we’ll accept on his behalf, because we miss getting Emmys.”
- Poehler playfully mentioned Elton John’s excitement for his special, “Elton’s EGOT to be excited about it.”
- Fey joked about the Apple Music Super Bowl halftime show, saying, “The concert so good it got us all pregnant: The Apple Music Super Bowl 57 Halftime Show Starring Rihanna.”
- Lastly, they poked fun at the 75th Tony Awards, calling it the show “celebrating the best in musicals based on movies that will probably be movies again,” with Fey adding, “There’s nothing wrong with that!” and Poehler agreeing, “Absolutely.”
Honoring a Legend
In the end, John emerged as the winner, and Fey and Poehler had the honor of presenting him with the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) honor. It was a fitting tribute to the legendary singer.
A Reunion of TV Icons
The 75th Emmy Awards witnessed several iconic TV casts reuniting on stage. Alongside Fey and Poehler, stars from “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Sopranos,” “Martin,” “Cheers,” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” gathered to present awards. The night kicked off with host Anthony Anderson’s medley of classic TV theme songs, adding to the nostalgia.
SNL Connection
As former “SNL” cast members, Fey and Poehler are no strangers to the “Weekend Update” sketch. They co-hosted the sketch together from 2004 to 2006. Prior to that, Fey shared the anchor desk with Jimmy Fallon from 2000 to 2004. Following Fey’s departure, Poehler co-anchored with Seth Meyers until 2008. Currently, “Weekend Update” is hosted by “SNL” cast members Colin Jost and Michael Che.
