Former President Donald Trump is set to attend the beginning of the new E. Jean Carroll civil damages trial, according to a source familiar with his travel plans.
A Defamation Case with a History
The trial revolves around a defamation case filed by E. Jean Carroll, a magazine writer who accused Trump of raping her in the 1990s. She also claimed that he defamed her when she made her allegations public.
In May of last year, a New York jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll. While she was awarded $5 million in damages, the jury did not hold Trump accountable for the rape allegations.
Trump’s Involvement and Public Remarks
The upcoming trial, commencing on Tuesday, focuses on Trump’s public comments about Carroll both during his presidency and after the jury’s verdict in May.
Trump’s Itinerary
After securing a victory in the Iowa caucuses, Trump will travel from Des Moines to New York City to be present for the trial’s commencement. However, it is unlikely that cameras will be allowed inside the U.S. District Court, and it is doubtful that the U.S. Secret Service will permit Trump to address the media outside the courthouse.
