GLAAD Media Award 2024 nominees

The 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards has just announced its list of nominees, and this year’s selection is all about centering and empowering trans and nonbinary individuals. With a record number of bills threatening their rights, it’s more important than ever to recognize and uplift their voices and stories.

A Celebration of LGBTQ Representation

GLAAD, the advocacy nonprofit group, has been honoring and highlighting LGBTQ representation in films, television shows, journalism, and other media for decades. This year’s nominees reflect a significant emphasis on featuring trans and nonbinary characters in various categories.

TV Shows and Video Games

Television shows like “9-1-1 Lone Star,” “The Chi,” and “Doctor Who” have been nominated for their outstanding portrayal of trans characters. Video games such as “Baldur’s Gate 3” and “Thirsty Suitors” have also received recognition for their inclusive representation.

Queer People of Color and LGBTQ Music Artists

GLAAD is celebrating the diversity within the LGBTQ community, with many nominees being queer people of color. The list includes renowned LGBTQ music artists like Billy Porter, Ice Spice, and Janelle Monáe. Moreover, more than half of the film nominees feature prominent queer, female characters, including “Anyone But You,” “The Color Purple,” and “Shortcomings.”

The Importance of LGBTQ Visibility

Amidst the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community, GLAAD’s President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis, emphasizes the need to celebrate and support LGBTQ talent and leaders. She recognizes the importance of maintaining progress in LGBTQ visibility and representation across all media fields, including film, television, music, journalism, and publishing.

The Ceremony and Nominees

The GLAAD Media Award ceremonies for 2024 will take place in Los Angeles on March 14 and in New York City on May 11. The full list of nominees can be found on the GLAAD website.
