The Aftermath and Investigation
According to the office of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who was attending the World Economic Forum in Switzerland at the time, the factory had approximately 20 to 30 workers present during the explosion. However, none of them could be found, suggesting the possibility of a fatal outcome. Rescue workers who arrived at the scene were unable to find any survivors, contrary to the earlier statement from provincial authorities that wounded individuals had been located.
Kritsada Manee-In, a dedicated rescue worker from the Samerkun Suphan Buri Rescue Foundation, expressed the difficulty in accurately counting the casualties due to the fragmented state of the bodies. This tragic event follows a previous explosion at the same factory in November 2022, which resulted in one fatality and three serious injuries. In light of this recent blast, the national police chief, Torsak Sukvimol, confirmed that legal action would be pursued against any parties responsible for the incident.
Previous Fireworks Tragedy
Thailand has sadly experienced similar accidents in the past, one of which occurred just last year in July. A massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse in southern Thailand claimed the lives of at least 10 people and left over 100 individuals injured. The blast, which occurred in a residential area, caused extensive damage to approximately 100 houses within a 1,640-foot radius. Reports from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation suggested that the explosion was likely triggered by sparks from construction work, leading to the ignition and subsequent detonation of the stored fireworks.
