The ongoing legal battle surrounding former President Donald Trump has taken an unexpected turn. Nathan Wade, the outside special prosecutor appointed by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, allegedly purchased plane tickets for both himself and Willis. These revelations emerged from credit card statements included in a court filing obtained by NBC News.
Misconduct accusations against Wade and Willis were previously made by a co-defendant in the Trump case, Michael Roman. Roman claimed that the two had engaged in an improper personal relationship, which resulted in them profiting from the prosecution at the taxpayers’ expense.
The credit card statements, attached to a filing by Wade’s estranged wife Joycelyn Wade in their ongoing divorce case, reveal that Wade had bought tickets for trips to San Francisco and Miami in 2022 and 2023. The statements show that one ticket cost almost $900 and the other nearly $500.
Although the district attorney’s office declined to comment on the credit card statements, this development raises questions about the nature of Wade and Willis’s relationship.
Willis, in a separate filing, accused Joycelyn Wade of attempting to harass and damage her professional reputation by subpoenaing her for a deposition in the divorce case. The district attorney stated that she does not possess any relevant information regarding the divorce.
Joycelyn Wade’s filing, on the other hand, painted a different picture. She claimed that her husband filed for divorce one day after Willis appointed him as the special prosecutor without her knowledge. Joycelyn alleged that her husband’s appointment resulted in a significant income for him, which she was not privy to.
The allegations made by Wade’s wife and co-defendant Michael Roman suggest a romantic relationship between Wade and Willis. These claims prompted Joycelyn Wade to seek a deposition with Willis to uncover more details about their affair, arguing that this information is relevant to the equitable division of the marital estate and spousal support determination.
A Cobb County judge has scheduled an emergency hearing to consider Willis’s attempt to block the subpoena and whether to unseal the divorce records.
Roman’s court filing also revealed that Wade has been paid $250 an hour for his work on the case, and his law firm has received at least $550,000 since 2022 for their involvement.
Roman is using the alleged relationship to argue for the disqualification of Willis, Wade, and the district attorney’s office from prosecuting the case. He contends that Willis bypassed the proper procedure in appointing Wade, compromising the integrity of the entire case.
As of now, Willis has not responded to these allegations, but her office has indicated that they will address them in a court filing. The presiding judge has ordered Willis’s office to respond to Roman’s filing by February 2.
It is important to note that four defendants in the election case have pleaded guilty, while others, including Roman and Trump, have pleaded not guilty.
