New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, a staunch supporter of former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley’s presidential bid, has chosen not to comment on whether Haley will continue her campaign if she fails to secure victory in her home state’s primary. During an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” moderator Kristen Welker sought Sununu’s opinion on Haley’s prospects.
Sununu tactfully responded, “That’s a month away.” He added, “To be honest, I’m not even looking at that right now. I’m focused on the next 72 hours. We’re going like gangbusters. She’s crisscrossing the state, reaching out to every voter, going everywhere.”
Pressing further, Welker posed the question again, asking if Haley would need to reassess her campaign if she didn’t win South Carolina. Sununu skillfully evaded a direct answer, stating, “After every state, you do evaluate your campaign, but that’s a month away. I mean, it’s really a month away.”
Welker also highlighted the endorsement of former President Donald Trump by South Carolina Senator Tim Scott. Scott, who withdrew from the 2024 presidential race in November, was appointed to his Senate seat by Haley in 2012. Haley expressed her disappointment with Scott’s decision at a rally in New Hampshire, to which Sununu dismissively responded, “Tim Scott doesn’t matter.”
Although Sununu previously predicted a resounding victory for Haley in New Hampshire, he has since tempered expectations. On Sunday, he stated that even a strong second-place finish would greatly benefit her campaign. According to Sununu, Haley aims to capitalize on the momentum gained from the New Hampshire primary and carry it forward.
“She’s challenging Donald Trump here,” Sununu emphasized, referring to the New Hampshire primary. “And now she gets to return to her home state, where she has previously enjoyed significant success. She knows how to navigate the ground game, and people often overlook the fact that the South Carolina primary is not next week—it’s still three or four weeks away. Nikki will have plenty of time to build upon the momentum she has already generated.”
