The Match Factory has recently secured the rights to distribute the Berlinale Competition title, “Dying,” directed by Matthias Glasner. The film will be distributed in Germany, Austria, and German-speaking Switzerland by Wild Bunch. With a stellar cast and a compelling storyline, “Dying” is set to captivate audiences at the prestigious Berlinale event.

A Family’s Journey

“Dying” follows the fragmented Lunies family, who have drifted apart over the years. Lissy, played by Corinna Harfouch, quietly finds solace as her husband Gerd (Hans-Uwe Bauer) battles dementia in a care facility. However, her newfound freedom is short-lived as she confronts her own mortality due to diabetes, cancer, and kidney failure.

Son Tom, portrayed by Lars Eidinger, is a talented conductor in his early 40s. As he works on a composition titled “Dying,” he unexpectedly becomes the surrogate father figure to his ex-girlfriend’s child. Meanwhile, Tom’s sister Ellen, played by Lilith Stangenberg, embarks on an affair with the married Sebastian, portrayed by Ronald Zehrfeld. Their shared love for alcohol complicates their relationship.

The Reunion

As Death looms near, the estranged family members finally come face-to-face with each other. Their individual struggles and personal journeys converge, leading to a powerful reunion. “Dying” portrays the complex dynamics of familial bonds, exploring themes of mortality, love, and redemption.

A Stellar Ensemble Cast

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Lars Eidinger, known for his roles in “All the Light We Cannot See” (2023), “Irma Vep” (2022), and “My Little Sister” (2020), leads the way. Corinna Harfouch, a Berlinale Camera winner in 1993, alongside Lilith Stangenberg and Ronald Zehrfeld, also bring their immense talent to the screen, creating a captivating and emotionally charged narrative.

A Recognized Director

Matthias Glasner, the film’s director, is no stranger to critical acclaim. His previous works, such as “Gnade” (2012) and “Der Freie Wille” (2006), have been nominated for the prestigious Golden Bear award at the Berlinale. With “Dying,” Glasner continues to delve into human emotions and complex relationships, offering a thought-provoking cinematic experience.
