Hawaii, known for its pristine beaches and laid-back atmosphere, is now the stage for a trial that uncovers a shadowy underworld. A prominent Honolulu businessman stands accused of orchestrating a series of crimes that reveal the dark underbelly of paradise.
The Allegations: Fear, Violence, and Revenge
In a gripping opening statement, Assistant U.S. Attorney William Akina laid bare the crimes attributed to Michael Miske Jr. These include kidnapping a 72-year-old accountant who owed a debt, releasing toxic chemicals into rival nightclubs, and even ordering the killing of his late son’s best friend.
“The defendant used fear, violence, and intimidation to get what he wanted,” declared Akina. “What he wanted was money, control, and revenge.”
A Tale of Two Portraits
Miske’s defense attorney, Michael Kennedy, painted a contrasting picture of his client. Contrary to the portrayal of a crime lord, Kennedy described Miske as a “self-made man.” Despite humble beginnings, growing up “on the wrong side of the tracks,” Miske successfully built a family business called Kamaʻaina Termite and Pest Control.
Kennedy highlighted Miske’s contributions to the community, emphasizing how his company preserved iconic Hawaiian structures and cultural treasures, such as the Waikiki Shell outdoor theater, ʻIolani Palace, and the Polynesian Cultural Center. He even provided free fumigation services to a concert hall after the city couldn’t afford it.
The Double Life: Nightclubs and Black Market Deals
While Kennedy portrayed Miske as a reputable businessman, Akina alleged a different side of his operations. According to the prosecutor, Miske owned several nightclubs where disputes over bar tabs were met with physical assault by his “thugs.” Additionally, Miske supposedly made millions by selling illegal commercial-grade aerial fireworks on the black market.
The prosecution further claimed that Miske groomed individuals from his neighborhood to carry out violent robberies against drug dealers and fulfill other sinister orders.
A Father’s Grief Turns Deadly
The most chilling accusation revolves around Miske’s alleged role in the murder of Johnathan Fraser, his son’s best friend. According to Akina, Miske blamed Fraser for a car crash that resulted in his son Caleb’s death in 2015. In 2016, Miske allegedly ordered a hit on Fraser as retribution, believing that a life should pay for a life. The prosecution claims that Miske even bought a boat to dispose of Fraser’s body in the ocean, though it remains missing.
Kennedy vehemently denied Miske’s involvement in Fraser’s disappearance, asserting that his client did not hold Fraser responsible for the tragic accident.
The Trial Unfolds
Amidst tensions and legal wrangling, the trial began with Miske as the sole defendant. Although his alleged associates, including his half-brother, have already pleaded guilty, Miske’s defense team deemed it necessary to challenge the proceedings. They argued that a new jury should be selected due to the guilty pleas made after the original jury had been assembled and sworn in.
