As the race for the governor of New Hampshire heats up, former President Donald Trump is making his presence felt. Republican candidates Chuck Morse and Kelly Ayotte find themselves navigating the tricky task of running on the same ballot as the polarizing former president. While they aim to win the support of Trump’s loyal base, they also need to appeal to voters who may not be fans of the former president.
Trump’s influence on the Republican primary for governor is already evident. Morse, a former state senator, has endorsed Trump and spoken at several of his rallies in the state. His decision to back the former president was influenced by conversations with Granite Staters who support Trump’s stance on issues like border security, energy policy, and inflation concerns.
However, Morse’s position on the 2020 election remains unclear. When asked about the legitimacy of Joe Biden’s victory, Morse redirected the focus to the upcoming 2024 election.
In this race, Trump’s endorsement can make a significant difference for supporters and detractors alike. Some voters, like Scott Nelson, believe that Trump’s endorsement will influence their decision in the governor’s race. On the other hand, anti-Trump voters like Deborah Bailin are less likely to support candidates endorsed by the former president.
Ayotte, who withdrew her support for Trump in 2016 after the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape, faces her own challenges. Despite her past opposition to Trump, she has stated that she will support the GOP nominee, even if it’s Trump. She has found support among Trump’s base due to her work with him in securing Justice Neil Gorsuch’s seat on the Supreme Court.
The governor’s race in New Hampshire is complicated, with candidates trying to distance themselves from the drama surrounding Trump while still appealing to their party’s base. Morse has indicated that he may not bring up Ayotte’s past opposition to Trump, leaving it up to the voters to decide.
Democrats, meanwhile, are optimistic about their chances to win the governorship. They plan to tie Republicans to Trump, especially on the abortion issue, highlighting Ayotte and Morse’s strong anti-choice records.
As the race for governor unfolds, both Republicans and Democrats are aware of Trump’s significant influence in politics. Gubernatorial candidates must navigate their campaigns in a way that distinguishes them from the top of the ticket while still addressing controversial remarks made by the former president.
In modern politics, candidates at all levels will be asked to condemn or support Trump’s likely controversial remarks. It remains to be seen how Trump’s influence will shape the outcome of the governor’s race in New Hampshire.
