Dexter King

A day after the passing of Dexter King, the younger son of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., his family came together to mourn his loss and celebrate his extraordinary contributions to his father’s legacy. In a heartfelt speech at the King Center, his sister Bernice King described him as a visionary and innovative leader who dedicated himself to preserving their father’s legacy.

Bernice King emphasized Dexter’s commitment to protecting their father’s legacy and his creative approach to the task. She highlighted his leadership and understanding of intellectual property that allowed the family to recognize the value of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches and writings.

“He put that creativity into it,” Bernice said. “People should see him as an innovative, creative leader who was very fierce and focused on ensuring that the legacy of my father is protected in the right manner.”

Dexter’s unique understanding of intellectual property in the entertainment industry made him a pioneer. He emphasized the importance of advancing their father’s legacy through technology and urged the family to embrace the new opportunities it presented. His vision will undoubtedly be fulfilled.

Not only was Dexter King a visionary leader, but he was also a brilliant mind and strategist. Bernice expressed her admiration for his ability to innovate and his role in producing the holiday song that featured renowned artists like Whitney Houston, Stephanie Mills, and New Edition when Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday became a national holiday in 1986.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bernice shared that Dexter had been a vegan for nearly half of his life. He peacefully passed away in his sleep after a courageous three-year battle with prostate cancer. Bernice found solace in the knowledge that he had a smile on his face in his final moments, believing it to be a warm welcome from their parents.

Dexter King was cremated on Tuesday, and plans for his memorial services are yet to be determined.
